We Never Really Mention it....

When I was little, I never shut up. Ever.

My mum likes to remind me of this, every chance she gets- and especially delights in the fact that now, our 5 year old daughter, does exactly the same [apparently, karmas a bitch...!]

Anyway, my point is that now, I don't do that much rambling on. Unless I'm up against it or really nervous, then I might. Or tell an inappropriate joke, you know the drill...

Ive never really questioned why. Until now.

Its because now, there's hardly ANY silence.

Theres noise EVEYWHERE.

Opinions...EVERYWHERE.

So I suppose in a way, I've kind of retreated and just concentrated on my family- and work...

Constant work.

Those of you that have followed for a while, will know how hard we work and now after, if im totally honest, quite a traumatic few months  [perhaps more on that another time] we have a very hard working team too...

But NOW is the time when I need to start talking more. About what we do... because apparently 'transparency' is a buzzword now- and you KNOW how much I dislike buzzwords.

To be even more 'heard' and dodge algorithms and gain likes and create interesting content and drive our business forward, apparently, we should be filming more stuff- you know, everyone loves a video...

Well, here's the thing. Im not that comfy in front of a camera. That's why I tend to write these blogs, so I can get everything down that may be bugging me, or things I should be sharing with the people who like to see what we're up to... front of camera is not my favourite place to be [even more so, having grown up playing with film bobbins in the corridors of BBC TV Centre as a child, whilst my parents worked as editors- I thought TV and everything it brought with it, was a massive pain in the arse to be honest!]

Aside from the discomfort aspect, we've honestly been too busy responding to recent demand for our products, to be documenting the processes. there just hasn't been time and we will always prioritise our customers and their orders...

From tomorrow, Im going to try really hard, to speak publicly more about what we do here, because it has come to light recently, that the things we thought were obvious, don't seem to be happening on a wider scale...

Take our UK manufacture for example. In the early days, I had lots of advice, some I sought and some I didn't. A lot of that advice, was to make the bags abroad. More of a profit margin you see... but I didn't. It didn't make any sense to me from an environmental perspective at all, so I dug my heels in and I found some people in the UK who could help me and when that didn't work out, for various reasons, I learnt to make them myself. I wanted to bring manufacture back to the UK. Right from the very beginning. And now we have! Well, its never left the UK, but my ultimate dream was to employ people here on the Isle of Wight. And we do! And they are LOVELY!

I didn't realise it was a 'thing'. I honestly didn't. It just didn't [and doesn't!] make any sense to me to be outsourcing work, miles away, when we are trying to create the least carbon footprint possible as a sustainable brand.

Im becoming increasingly confused and driven to write, as more and more sustainable products and brands pop up. Im not sure I can work out how any product, made from new fabrics or materials- is sustainable?

If you think im wrong, please do let me know... Im genuinely interested.

Is there a repairs service? An end of life guarantee? Is there a living wage? In the country that the items are being made? How is that overseen? These are all the questions I would like answered- and the ones I am prepared to answer myself.

As I mentioned earlier 'transparency' is now a thing. Don't get me wrong, its rightly so- but is it right to use it as a selling point? Are we not supposed to be paving the way? Leading by example? I just don't feel right applauding ourselves for things that should be happening anyway...

Im not saying other brands are wrong to do so- im just saying I don't feel right doing it...

Whilst im going to try really hard to feel more comfortable talking face to face about this stuff, its quite a steep learning curve, so please bear with me...

In saying that, you will most likely never hear me talk about some of the things I maybe should- just because we don't shout it from the rooftops or schedule a social media post every 5 minutes, doesn't mean its not happening.

In fact, it most likely means that the reason for the silence is because that's EXACTLY what we're up to!

See you [with my actual face- arrrgghhh!] soon!
